Who doesn’t like cake? I mean seriously. Cake is my favorite dessert. I’ve fallen so much in love with wedding cake as a dessert, that I’ve literally tried to recreate my favorite ones at home during off season when I’m really craving wedding cake!
I may be ridiculous, but it’s okay. I’m okay with it, and Scott likes cake, so I think he’s okay with it too.
That brings me to our featured vendor of the day – Rachel Bakes!
I heard about Rachel Bakes just because I’m in the wedding community, and decided to send her a message myself when looking for a great smash cake for Noah for his first birthday 🙂 She was super responsive, helpful and worked with what I had in mind and my budget for the event. It was also easy to pick up from her and easy to send over payment. All in all, I had an amazing experience with her and would recommend her to any bride. In fact, I’m going to introduce you to her!
Tell us a little about yourself (where you’re from, what you’re up to, do you have a day job? A quirky fact about you?
I was born and raised in Virginia Beach. I grew up in Ocean Lakes, so of course, I am a Dolphin 🙂 Currently, I work full-time as a training manager for a local restaurant franchise and bake on the weekends. I hope to take my business full-time within the next two years. While I am a baker, I do not enjoy eating my baking. I’m not sure how many other bakers are like that, but for whatever reason, I don’t eat my baking unless its chocolate cake. There’s just something about chocolate! If you’ve ever wondered (because of my last name) yes, I am related to Elizabeth Henson from Elizabeth Henson Photos and Creatives Live Happy. She is my amazing sister-in-law who has helped Rachel Bakes from the very beginning. I can honestly say she is a huge part of Rachel Bakes coming to life.
What go you into the cake business?
Getting into cakes just kind of happened. After high school I went to college and tried that for a few years, but didn’t really settle down into anything. I’ve definitely always loved artsy things. So I kind of just got settled in my job and got promoted fairly quickly and before I knew it, I was stuck. There was no opportunity for me to advance anymore and years went by. Then one Christmas, my brother and sister-in-law bought me a KitchenAid Mixer and a friend bought me cake decorating classes for my birthday in January and I was hooked! It took about a year for me to decide to actually make my hobby a business. I kept going back and forth and questioning whether or not I could really do it, and one day I just did.
What is your favorite cake that you’ve ever designed?
My favorite wedding cake was the pink and gold love cake for my bride Jacqueline. She was a very special bride and so sweet. My favorite cupcakes are my Let’s Wed Bridal Luncheon shoot cupcakes.
