I still remember the day that Kathryn came back to CNU from summer break with a new narrative: she met a boy. It wasn’t just any boy, either… we could tell this was a very serious boy the Kathryn.
I still remember sitting in a room (that wasn’t private, haha) with her and asking her a million questions about him: is he a christian? does he treat you well? what’s he like? do you like him… like A LOT?
All of her answers left me giddy and excited for her blooming relationship. Kathryn wasn’t just my friend, she was a student at the ministry that I was graciously given the opportunity to watch over and shepherd for a couple of years, so this boy of Kathryn’s wasn’t a small deal. I wanted to make sure that I invested well in her and that included being a good encourager in the face of romantic relationships.
I only met Ben once in person, but I heard a lot about him through Kathryn. Ben was an incredible boyfriend to Kathryn: he read scripture with her and books aimed at growing their faith together, he walked with her through one of the hardest and most difficult things life has to offer (the way too early death of her father), he pursued her in a long distance relationship (he was in school in NY while she was in VA), drove many hours to see her just for a short weekends, and so much more. Ben won my approval way before I even met him because he treated Kathryn the way she deserved to be treated.
Kathryn is still one of my favorite people, and she’s met her match in Ben. She is still one of the only people who can ALWAYS make me laugh, but then challenge me in the next sentence. You can never be fooled by her hilarity, she’s also incredible deep & thoughtful. She doesn’t accept the status quo, but instead searches out the truth for herself. She also isn’t afraid to tell you the hard things – something that has altered my life forever.
Ben & Kathryn, it was an honor to end my formal wedding season with your incredibly beautiful wedding on the farm that brought you together. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve you and look forward to seeing how God uses your marriage to change the world. Love you so much.
